The Queenstown Events Centre was overlooked for the 2015 World Cup but received better news yesterday when New Zealand Cricket released details of the West Indies tour.
The Caribbean side will play the Black Caps in three tests, five one-dayers and two twenty20 fixtures in December and January.
Queenstown will host game three of the ODI series on New Year's Day, and Dunedin was also among the victors, with the University Oval hosting the first test on December 3-7.
Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes welcomed the news.
''I'm delighted that the University Oval continues to be granted test matches whenever there is a test series.
''It has happened fairly regularly now for a number of years and I think that is a credit to our ground and the way everybody involved in it has continued to develop it.''
The January 1 ODI ties in nicely with the traditional holiday period, but the timing for the test in Dunedin is perhaps less than perfect.
December can be a wet month in Dunedin and it is during the university holidays when the city's population takes a dive.
Dykes, though, was unperturbed.
''We've played a test in November, we've played a test in January and March. I think it is as good as any time, to be fair.
''I like the idea it is not immediately before Christmas, so there is not that distraction. And to have the first test of a series is always exciting.''
There have been five tests at the University Oval. The Blacks Caps have won two and the other three have been draws - two of those were rain-affected.
The University Oval's drainage system was criticised following that match but has since been extensively upgraded.
Queenstown last hosted a one-dayer in January 2011. The game was abandoned after 20 minutes due to poor weather.
There have been nine one-dayers at the venue. The Black Caps have won five, lost one and the other three have been abandoned.
India is also touring New Zealand next year. There is speculation the series might be shortened from three to two tests, in which case Dunedin is unlikely to be assigned a further test.
