Steel shooter Jhaniele Fowler put on a near-flawless display to guide her side to a 67-52 win against the Northern Mystics at the Stadium Southland Velodrome last night.

The towering Jamaican international landed 53 of her 54 attempts on goal.

Of course, she would not get nearly as many goals if it was not for the superb feeding of Jodi Brown.

The Steel captain is clearly enjoying passing to the 1.98m goal shoot and the combination is growing in confidence each week.

It is the most productive duo in the tournament - Fowler leads the scoring with 250 goals and Brown leads the assists with 93.

Steel coach Janine Southby knows she is on to good thing.

''Jhaniele is amazing isn't she?'' she said.

''She has done a lot of work on being available for the players and I think we were really disciplined about what we were putting into the circle tonight.''

It was a crucial encounter for both sides. For the Mystics, a fifth loss in six games means their playoff hopes are all but gone.

The Steel has improved to two wins from five games and can look forward to hosting the Swifts at the venue on Monday.

''I knew we could do it. From my perspective, it was about the girls having that belief and you know they led every quarter and won every quarter. They did it convincingly. It is a huge step forward for us.''

The visiting side started like a team short on confidence and, in a sloppy opening, must have thrown possession away four or five times.

Had the Steel been more clinical it could have established a healthy buffer within five minutes but it was guilty of giving the ball back to the Mystics.

Instead, the home side had to wait for the final third of the quarter to pull away. Brown provided the spark with a bullet pass into Fowler and then followed it up with a delicate lob. Not content with amassing even more assists, she read play beautifully and moved swiftly to her left to pluck a pass away from its intended recipient.

In about a minute she had helped the Steel build that buffer it promised to deliver earlier in the period.

Leading 18-12 at the break, the Steel continued to mount pressure, stretching its lead to 10 goals. Steel goal defence Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick had her best game with some telling intercepts and stout defence.

Southby made good use of a time-out to help stymie a mini rally from the Mystics and Tone-Fitzpatrick responded, nabbing another intercept when play resumed.

The Steel has had a habit of haemorrhaging goals towards the end of quarters and the break helped the team regroup.

Not happy to rest on a nine-goal halftime lead, Southby replaced wing attack Courtney Tairi with Shannon Francois.

With time slipping away fast, the Mystics needed to make a run. The Steel imploded against the Pulse two weeks ago but, fresh from a bye, it closed the game out, winning the second half 33-27.
