Renwick smashes century for Volts

No safety net. No worries.

Mitch Renwick is flourishing in his new role for Otago.

The 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batter moved south from Palmerston North to try his luck in Otago in 2018-19.

The Volts needed a replacement for long-serving gloveman Derek de Boorder and Renwick was up for the challenge.

But the right-hander struggled to make an impact with the bat and lost his spot behind the stumps to Max Chu.

He had to reinvent himself as a top order batter and the transformation is looking a lot more complete this summer.

Renwick stroked a century yesterday to help the Volts reach 374 for six on day three of their Plunket Shield game against Central Districts at Saxton Oval. The Volts lead by 353.

It was Renwick’s second first-class century this season and third in total.

He combined with Hamish Rutherford (101) in 173-run opening stand to put the Volts in a commanding position.

Renwick laboured through the 90s but his patient knock of 134 featured 18 fours. A good chunk of the boundaries were dispatched to the rope at point or through the covers.

He used the full face of the bat — a good sign for an opening batter.

Renwick’s spot in the side looked a little tenuous at the end of last season.

Runs are his only currency now he does not have the wicketkeeping to fall back on. And he is flush with runs as is Rutherford, who also scored his second century of the season.

The pair put on 251 against Central Districts at the University Oval last week and were quickly back into their stride yesterday.

Otago resumed on 45 without loss, nursing a 24-run lead.

Plan A was to push on and expand the lead to, well, heaps.

Renwick and Rutherford did the bulk of the work but Nick Kelly, who is fresh from a double hundred, plundered 66 from 82 balls in a more than handy cameo.

The batters dominated but Doug Bracewell was the pick of the bowlers with one for 55 from 21 overs, while left arm spinner Jayden Lennox nabbed a couple of wickets.

The match between Canterbury and Wellington at the Basin Reserve is all over with a day to spare.

Canterbury won by 314 runs.

Matt Henry (four for 37), Will Williams (three for 21) and Ed Nuttall (two for 14) combined to dismiss the Firebirds for a paltry total of 115. The home side only managed 134 in its first dig, so it was a disappointing game with the bat for Wellington.

Ken McClure helped set up the big win with 130 in Canterbury’s second innings.
