Queenstown Primary, St Joseph's and Wakatipu High schools and more than 2000 central Queenstown customers are expected to be covered by the Government's ultrafast broadband network by July next year.
Schools, hospitals and 90% of businesses have been assigned ultrafast broadband priority by the year 2016 under the Government's $1.35 billion plan.
Homes and other businesses should get links by 2019.
Communications and Information Technology Minister Amy Adams has recently talked to civic, tourism, business and education leaders to mark the start of work to build an ultrafast broadband network in the resort.
Introducing ultrafast broadband to Queenstown would meet a growing demand for connectivity from businesses, schools, health providers, residents and tourists, Ms Adams said.
"Tourism plays a significant role in New Zealand's economy.
That means businesses need to have first-rate infrastructure to be able to connect and interact with their global customer base.
"Ultrafast broadband will also make it easier for tourists to stay in touch with their family and friends, and give them the ability to quickly upload photos and video from their holiday in Queenstown," Ms Adams said.
