World Peace Day falls on August 6, and a gathering to mark the occasion will take place at the Oamaru Hiroshima memorial in the Oamaru Public Gardens at 12.30pm.
Organiser Hugh Perkins said a commemorative stone was placed in a corner of the Woodland Garden in 2005, on the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
The memorial would be a perfect place to conduct a 20-minute gathering, he said.
"Many residents are probably unaware that for a number of years this memorial has been located in the public gardens, at the very western end, in the Woodland Garden."
Mr Perkins said similar gatherings would take place throughout New Zealand and the world and a warm welcome would be extended to all who wanted to share in the act of remembrance and peace.
"The gathering will be simple, but powerful, incorporating music, silence, poetry and symbolism. It will be focused on remembering the victims of Hiroshima and all modern conflicts, as well as fostering an ongoing commitment to peace."
