A 32-year-old Argentinian woman living in Queenstown lost control of her Mitsubishi car on Thompson St on Saturday at 8.25am and crashed through a road sign before the car came to a stop at Deco Backpackers hostel.
Sergeant Mark Gill, of Queenstown, said yesterday the woman was the only person involved in the incident. She was not injured and alcohol was not involved. Dangerous driving charges were likely to be laid, Sgt Gill said.
• A 45-year-old Queenstown man also faces driving charges after he allegedly performed a handbrake skid in a car on Frankton Rd and nearly collided with a bus on Saturday at 11pm.
The incident was witnessed by a passing police patrol. The man allegedly registered a breath-alcohol level of 708mcg, Sgt Gill said.
• A 25-year-old Englishman was charged with driving with a breath-alcohol level of 606mcg on Lake Esplanade on Saturday at 1.10am.
• An 18-year-old Lake Hayes Estate man was charged with youth driving with a breath-alcohol level of 381mcg following a public report of a revving car engine in the estate at 5.25am yesterday.
• Two men were arrested for allegedly throwing signs around outside a takeaway pizza shop in Queenstown yesterday at 2am. The men were released on a pre-charge warning.
• A report by a member of the public of a parapenter crashing in Lake Wakatipu about 1km from the shore near Kingston prompted Coastguard Queenstown and nearby boating enthusiasts to respond with assistance on Saturday about noon. However, they were told before they could arrive it was a planned landing and the emergency was called off.
• A 20-year-old Queenstown man was arrested for allegedly increasing acceleration and "pulling a wheelie" on a 1000cc motorbike with a woman pillion passenger in crowded traffic on Friday at 6.15pm.
The man was charged and his licence was suspended for three months after he allegedly committed the offence on Stanley St. The street had more vehicles and pedestrians than usual due to the nearby Teva Slopestyle bike jumping event in the Ballarat St car park.
• A 48-year-old man from Nelson was deemed to be acting suspiciously by police officers on Brecon St on Friday at 12.20am.
Officers invoked a Misuse of Drugs Act search and arrested him for possession of cannabis after allegedly finding 2g of the drug on his person, Sgt Gill said on Friday.
• An intoxicated 20-year-old Wanaka man suffered a "nasty deep cut to the back of his skull" when he fell to the ground on Coronation Dr on Thursday at 7.50pm, Sgt Gill said.
The man was taken by St John Queenstown ambulance to the Lakes District Hospital.
• An elderly man with an American accent dressed as a rabbi was reported wandering around hotels asking for free items on Thursday at 10.30pm. Police were alerted and the area was searched.
Sgt Gill said people should call the police if approached by the man.
• A 34-year-old Queenstown man was arrested on Friday at 12.50am for the historic offence of attempting to remove a boat and trailer from near Twizel at Christmastime. The man was disturbed during the alleged attempt and was identified by Queenstown police by his vehicle registration.
• A 25-year-old Irishman working in Queenstown was dealt with by police for allegedly stealing $2.50 of food from Fresh Choice supermarket on Thursday at 9.30pm. The man was given an official police warning.
