Council staff recently travelled the district, visiting some sites and endeavouring to find others, to assess their usefulness.
Finance corporate director Wayne Scott said the aim of the review was to rationalise the properties and centralise activities on Cromwell.
The council's Wanaka property would be retained and the Cromwell site would need a rebuilt to suit, he said.
Some of the properties being looked at included a shed and house at Tarras which were being rented, a facility at Arrowtown, a house, garage and land at Ettrick, a 4ha block with shed at Galloway and sections in the Ida Valley and Alexandra.
It was land the council had "collected up" during the amalgamation of local government in 1989 and from the days when the rabbit board had staff around the region, Mr Scott said.
"Some of it is still used, but a lot is no longer [needed]."
The review did not involve any of the staff or offices in Central Otago, he said.
