In their twilight years, most people are more disappointed by the things they failed to do, than the things they did do.

It is the reason Hungarian 36-year-old Gabor Kerekes came to New Zealand in 2012.

''I was looking for adventure.

''I didn't know what to expect,'' he admitted.

''It's a different part of the world and it's very far away. I wanted to check it out.''

Within weeks of arriving, he had tried bungy jumping, jet-boating, and wrestling with sandflies in Milford Sound.

''I've loved it so much - I just decided to stay.''

While the lifestyle, beautiful scenery and friendly people were a big drawcard, he said there was another reason to stay.

''Maybe, there is a boy here who is encouraging me to live here.''

Mr Kerekes said his appetite for adventure was waning after becoming a New Zealand citizen in Dunedin yesterday.

He was one of more than 40 people who became New Zealand citizens at a ceremony at the Municipal Chambers.
