Quarry work halted in Earncleugh

Queenstown contracting company Steve Rout Ltd (SRL) was yesterday ordered to stop work on a schist quarrying operation near the Fraser Dam Rd, at Earnscleugh, until the Central Otago District Council has inspected the site.

Council planning team leader Ann Rogers said she had asked the company to halt quarrying after receiving phone calls and seeing photos yesterday of the work already carried out.

"I told them they need to stop until we get up there and have a look in more detail at the work and decide what consents, if any, they might need," Ms Rogers said.

SRL operations manager Jim Tennant would not comment when contacted by the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

The council will inspect the site today with company spokesman Stacey Rout.

Shirleen Steel, who lives near the quarrying site, said she had safety concerns for cyclists, joggers, horse riders, and "kids on bikes" using the Fraser Dam Rd.

"They just wouldn't expect to see a huge truck on that road," she said.
