Bredin was named yesterday in the national umpires squad which will take control of games in the ANZ Premiership, Beko Netball League and Netball Super Club competitions, covering more than 90 games during the 2018 domestic season.
Bredin returns to the squad after not officiating any major domestic games in New Zealand last year. He withdrew from umpiring in New Zealand at the start of last year because of work commitments and an inability to come to agreement with Netball New Zealand.
He is part of a 16-strong squad named yesterday.
This year is shaping up to be a busy one for Bredin who is also rising the ranks as a rugby referee in addition to work and family commitments.
Also returning to the netball squad is Danielle Maulder, who is Bredin’s partner. She took last year off when the couple welcomed baby son Nixon.
Making the step up to the squad this year is Gracey Farquharson, who spent 2017 on the zone umpire watchlist and has had two years of strong performances at the national under-19 and secondary schools championships.
She attended Southland Girls’ High School where she played but has been concentrating on umpiring in the past few years.
Other southern umpires to make the squad are Sasha McLeod and experienced international umpire Kristie Simpson. Bredin and Simpson will be umpiring at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.
The national umpire squad will be coached by Colleen Bond, Fay Meiklejohn and Jan Teesdale.
