Otago Fish & Game Council field officer and hatchery manager Steve Dixon said about 800 rainbow trout would be released in Southern Reservoir in Dunedin for novice anglers to try to catch at the two council Take A Kid Fishing Day events at the end of this month.
Some of the trout were ''lunkers'' weighing up to 6kg, he said.
The event on September 24 was full but places were available for September 30.
As the reservoir was closed for the two events, in the name of fairness, the council released more rainbow trout from the hatchery at Macraes' Oceana Gold mine for fishing licence holders to catch from October 1 when the season starts.
The release of about 100 trout in Sullivans Dam began yesterday and about 100 trout would be released in Tomahawk Lagoon.
The children were expected to catch about 20% of the trout released into Southern Reservoir there would be plenty of fish waiting for licence holders when the season started.
The season was ''looking good'' and the rivers had recovered from the flood in July.
''It's good to get a flush out now and again.''
