Perfume pundits yesterday got a peek at the process behind fragrant lavender oil near Outram.

Farm Lavender Row hosted a harvest open day, showing off its harvest and distillation process.

Owner Paula Cosgrove said there was plenty of interest in the oil-making operation — about 400 people were at the open day, enjoying food, views and lavender products.

"It’s just not something you get to see very often.

"Even the other lavender farms don’t seem to put on that sort of demonstration."

People had been fascinated by the story, she said.

"It’s all very well showing them little 5ml and 10ml bottles of oil [but] it’s that whole sort of journey.

"It’s far more meaningful for people rather than just picking it up off the shelf in a shop."

The full process could take up to 60 minutes.

Across the day, people were able to see the whole process, from bush to oil, she said.

"We had a number of aromatherapists yesterday who heard about us and wanted to try our oils and were impressed with the quality.

"[It] also helps people to understand the other range of oils that we do ... things like Douglas fir and manuka and kanuka and tea tree."
