Doug Winter is pleased he can now support his favourite rugby team in public after policing in Taupo for seven years.

The Balclutha-born, self-described "Otago man" is Cromwell's latest police officer and is looking forward to participating in a variety of outdoor activities provided in the Central Otago area.

Const Winter (48), moved to Cromwell on June 20 and has enjoyed his first week working from the town's police station as a general duties officer.

His family, including 8-year-old and 3-year-old daughters, and a 6-month-old son, will join him in Cromwell in about three weeks.

Const Winter, who's first post as a police officer was in Taupo, said he was excited to move to a smaller area and become involved in its community.

"Up there [Taupo], you are just another number really. Central Otago is a great place to live and a great place to bring up children . . . I always planned to move back to the South Island," he said.

His family in Christchurch and Timaru are now closer and Const Winter plans to make the most of Cromwell's central location.

He said being in a small town would give him the chance to be involved in a wider variety of duties as an officer, and also provide for off-duty outdoor pursuits.

"A lot of things I'm interested in are down here, whether it's tramping, skiing, mountain biking, or rugby," he said.
