Woman in court over publican's death

A 38-year-old woman appeared in Christchurch District Court this afternoon over the slaying of a West Coast publican.

The woman, who has name suppression, entered no plea to the manslaughter of the Little Wanganui Hotel proprietor David White in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr White, 42 was punched the head by a woman after he intervened in a disagreement between her and another woman at the hotel, 75km north of Westport.

Mr White fell to the ground and could not be resuscitated.

The woman was remanded for two weeks, the Christchurch Court News website reported

Friend Daniel Vos, who has stepped in to run the hotel with his wife, said he hoped Mr White's body would be released now the charge had been laid.

The family has not been able to make firm funeral arrangements because of the delay in releasing the body.

A service is planned in Mr White's hometown of Wanaka.
