Woman in court over kidnapping

A 36-year-old Hamilton woman extradited from Australia was remanded on bail today when she appeared in Hamilton District Court in relation to a high-profile kidnapping case.

The woman, who was granted name suppression, appeared on one charge of kidnapping and was remanded until later this month.

She was arrested last Thursday in Queensland in relation to the kidnapping of six-year-old boy two years ago.

In August 2006, the boy was snatched from a Hamilton library and taken into hiding, before being given up five months later.

The boy's grandfather, Dick Halton Headley, 70, and his mother, Kay Halton Skelton, 38, were convicted over the kidnapping last year.

Three other people have also been convicted for their role in the kidnapping.

The boy's father, Chris Jones, told the Waikato Times the woman's attempt to escape the charges was "bizarre".

"I don't understand why she hasn't (co-operated) because if she had it would have been unnecessary for the extradition process to take place and it may have not come back before the judge."

Mr Jones is involved in court proceedings with the boy's grandmother, Wendy Headley, to recover court costs.

He tried to recover $30,000 from Skelton last year but she was declared bankrupt.
