Teen remanded over dairy robbery

A 16-year-old girl accused of robbing a Wanganui dairy at knife-point has been remanded in custody.

Two girls were involved in the robbery, which happened as the Harper Street Dairy was closing shortly before 6pm on Sunday, police spokeswoman Kim Perks said.

Both girls entered the shop, and with their faces covered and armed with knives, allegedly demanded money from the 46-year-old female owner, who was alone in the shop.

While one of the girls grabbed the woman, the other took tobacco from a shelf and tried to open the till, Ms Perks said.

As the woman struggled with her attacker, she was able to activate a panic alarm and the pair fled.

A 16-year-old girl appeared in Wanganui District Court today charged with aggravated robbery and was remanded in custody to appear in Wanganui Youth Court tomorrow.

A 13-year-old, who was also arrested in connection with the robbery, was referred to Youth Aid.
