Prominent Maori leader Sir Archie Taiaroa is seriously ill in Waikato Hospital.
Sir Archie, 73, was admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke, Te Ohu Kaimoana chief executive Peter Douglas told NZPA.
"He was in his home in Taumarunui when he had a stroke," Mr Douglas said.
"He's very ill."
Sir Archie was chairman of Te Ohu Kaimoana (the Maori Fisheries Trust) for five years until deciding to step down last year. He remains a member of the board.
He is also chairman of the Whanganui River Maori Trust.
He was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003, and in 2009 he became Sir Archie after changes to the honours system made him eligible to accept a knighthood.
