Savage attack followed check on scooter noise

A man is in intensive care with head, facial and spinal injuries after going outside his house to see who was driving a noisy scooter up and down the street.

The 56-year-old Shannon man faced further surgery in Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings after he was punched and kicked outside his home early on Saturday, police said.

The man had extensive head, facial and spinal injuries and was in a stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit, Detective Steve Yates said.

Two local men aged 19 and 22 were to appear in Levin District Court this afternoon charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The assault happened about 3.30am on Saturday when the victim walked outside his house to find out what why a motorised scooter was being driven so noisily up and down the street.

Mr Yates said he was pushed to ground and repeatedly assaulted.

A passerby heading to work saw two people running from the area and alerted emergency services. The alleged offenders were found soon after.

The victim was taken to Palmerston North Hospital and then airlifted to Hastings.
