A psychiatric report has now been ordered for a man charged over a bizarre home invasion in which a police officer and a police dog were stabbed.
Judge Tony Couch requested the report under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act when the man's case was called in Christchurch District Court today.
The man was granted continued name suppression at the request of defence counsel Michael Knowles.
Judge Couch remanded the man to December 9.
The incident happened at a house in Coppell Place, in the Christchurch suburb of Hoon Hay, when a couple woke at 4am to find a man in their bedroom, holding a knife.
There was a struggle after the police arrived. An officer was cut but police say he was saved from more serious injury by his stab-resistant vest. Police dog Koal was stabbed in the head several times.
The man was admitted to Christchurch Hospital afterwards for treatment, including surgery for a dog bite.
He has entered no pleas to charges of having a weapon after breaking into the house, attempting to murder the officer, wounding the dog, and threatening to kill the woman who lived at the house.
