A woman whose seven-year-old son was "brutally" murdered by his stepfather will be sentenced next year over his death.
Mary Joachim, 28, pleaded guilty in Nelson District Court last month to failing to provide Duwayne Toetu Taote Pailegutu with the necessaries of life.
Following a short hearing in Auckland District Court today she was remanded on bail for sentencing on February 26.
Duwayne died on July 2, after being beaten by his stepfather Johnny Joachim at the family's home in Stoke, Nelson.
Johnny Joachim, 37, was in October jailed for life, with an 18-year non-parole period, for Duwayne's murder.
Justice Robert Dobson told the court during sentencing that Joachim had subjected Duwayne to a "vicious and sustained attack" eight days before he died.
He had been angry with Duwayne for leaving a jumper at school and not showing respect to him.
Justice Dobson said that from the day of that beating up to the Duwayne's death, Joachim stopped his wife from seeking any medical assistance for her son.
