Man dead after Christchurch car crash

A 21-year-old man has died after a collision in Christchurch this morning.

Police say the car appears to have been travelling at speed before it lost control and collided with a lamppost in Woolston.

Emergency services were called at 2am, and found that the driver had been thrown from the vehicle. He died as a result of his injuries.

The female occupant, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries.

Police and the Serious Crash Unit are investigating.

The death brings the holiday period road toll to 10.

The 70-year-old woman killed in a crash north of Waiouru on Tuesday has been identified this morning as Carol Dawn Gibson from Lower Hutt.

The collision happened about 2.40pm on The Desert Road when Mrs Gibson's southbound car crossed the centre line and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Four occupants of the second vehicle were injured.
