Man accused of murdering toddler named

Name suppression has been lifted for the man accused of murdering 16-month-old Riley Justin Osborne, in Northland last week.

He is Kyle Robert Skerten, 21, of Kerikeri.

Skerten, who is unemployed, lived in the same house as the child, in a unit in Kerikeri with Riley's 22-year-old mother, and a female family friend.

Family and friends today buried Riley just a day after Skerten appeared in Kaikohe District Court charged with his murder. Riley died in Auckland's Starship Hospital in Auckland on December 23 after his life support was switched off.

He had been airlifted to the hospital from his Kerikeri home four days earlier with what police described as "horrific" head injuries.

The accused man, who also faced six methamphetamine-related charges, was granted interim name suppression until after today's private funeral.

No bail application was made and he was remanded in custody until next month.
