Eight dead in horror 24 hours on roads

Eight people have been killed in a horror 24 hours on the country's roads, including four in one crash in the Waikato.

Two cars were involved in the Waikato crash, which happened at 7.40pm last night.

Two other people were transported to hospital, one in critical condition and one seriously injured.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Four more people died in three crashes from late Friday night to early Saturday afternoon.

On Friday night a Gisborne woman died after she was hit by a car on Cobden St, Gisborne.

Emergency services were called just after 11pm. The driver and passenger have been helping police with their enquiries.

Two young men died and another was badly injured after a crash at Dairy Flat, north of Auckland about 1am.

Police said two cars collided between Bawden Rd and Postman Rd. The two occupants of one car were killed and the only occupant of the other car was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

And a woman died in a crash in the Far North at 12.30pm.

The crash happened on SH10 at Kaingaroa, north of Kaitaia.Two children in the same car were injured.
