A Waikato father who took his baby on an illegal road race was described as "death on wheels" as he was sentenced for dangerous driving at Hamilton District Court.
Shane Desmond Murphy's eight-month-old baby was showered with glass as its father crashed his car while driving in an illegal Hamilton street race, the Waikato Times reported.
The 20-year-old from Morrinsville was yesterday fined $500 and disqualified from driving for a year after admitting a charge of dangerous driving.
Community Magistrate Pat Ferguson told the court Murphy was "death on wheels" as details of his offending were described.
Police estimated Murphy was travelling about 120kmh when he swerved suddenly to avoid another vehicle and lost control during a race on Hamilton's Te Rapa Rd on April 3.
His Subaru WRX spun on to the kerb and hit a power pole.
The force of the crash smashed the back window of his car, showering glass on to his baby who was restrained in the back seat.
