A Christchurch teenager has died in hospital after the car he was driving ploughed into a concrete power poll in North Canterbury last Friday.
Zachary Cody Cameron, 15, was taken off life support at Christchurch Hospital about 6pm yesterday.
He had been driving a Ford Falcon with four teenage passengers near Hawarden, 80km north of Christchurch, when the crash happened on Horsley Downs Rd about 9pm Friday.
Detective Sergeant Rex Barnett of Rangiora police said it appeared he had over-corrected on a slight right-hand bend and lost control.
The car slammed sideways into a heavy concrete power poll, striking the front-seat passenger side of the car.
"The passenger and the driver are the ones who took the impact," Mr Barnett said. They were cut from the car by fire crews.
The 15-year-old front-seat passenger sustained multiple injuries and was in a serious but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital.
One of three 14-year-old backseat passengers received minor injuries, while the other two were uninjured.
Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, Mr Barnett said.
"Once again, it's another tragic vehicle crash that takes the toll in North Canterbury to six since (the start of) May," he said.
A scene examination had been carried out and the death will be referred to the coroner.
