The Dunedin City Council is replacing and upgrading the public toilets in Frederick St, near the intersection of George St.

The council said in a statement work to upgrade the toilets would start today and was expected to take about a month.

During this time, the toilets would be closed to the public.

Frederick St would remain open for pedestrians and vehicles for the majority of the time while upgrades were carried out.

A new building would be installed in place of the existing toilets as part of the upgrades — this would take place between 8pm and 6am next Wednesday and Thursday, depending on the weather.

Upper Frederick St, between George and Great King Sts, would close during those times while a crane lowered the upgraded toilets into place.

Regular access to Frederick St was expected to resume next Thursday evening, the statement said.

Further work to the new toilet’s design and amenities would be completed by late next month.

The upgrades were part of the council’s commitment to improving its facilities in the long-term plan — this included the installation of two new public toilets each year.
