Company hits ball out of park with donation

Talk about being good sports.

A Dunedin building company has donated sports equipment to Port Chalmers School as a "fabulous goodwill gesture" for sharing Albertson Ave with it while it built a housing development for Kainga Ora.

Trident Homes Dunedin managing director Anna Johnston said sporting equipment was a good option because it got children outside and active.

The equipment included netballs, basketballs, cricket bats and tennis racquets.

"It’s important for kids to be outside and active ... what better way than having sports gear."

Trident tried to minimise disruption to other residents as well and

donated some money to Port Chalmers Kindergarten, which used the funds to buy dress-up costumes for the children.

Trident began work in February on nine new social houses that were a mix of one and two-bedroom homes for Kainga Ora.

They had a universal design.

They are expected to be completed later this month.

The houses are replacements for older state homes which are no longer fit for purpose.

Principal Vicky Nicolson said break times were about children playing outside.

Being able to flood the field with new gear from Trident was awesome, she said.

"It’s a fabulous goodwill gesture."

Trident had been very accommodating of the school’s needs.
