Warning over bogus collectors

A man posing as a charity collector in St Kilda has prompted police to warn the public.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of the Southern District command centre, said the centre was called by a concerned Prince Albert Rd resident after a person claiming to be collecting for St John knocked on their door about 12.30pm on Saturday.

The person knocking on the door was unable to show the resident any identification, Snr Sgt Butterfield said.

Police were unable to locate the man, but were keen to warn people over the risk of people posing as charity collectors.

''Unless they clearly have identification from a well-known organisation, don't give them money and if they are suspicious, call the police.''

In this instance, the member of the public did the right thing by calling police and not giving the person any money.

St John South Island region communications adviser Ian Henderson said the collector was definitely not legitimate.

St John never did door-to-door collecting and held only a street collection in April during its annual appeal, Mr Henderson said.
