Pupils at Tahuna Normal Intermediate School could have safer and more modern facilities as early as February if all goes to plan.

School principal Tony Hunter said the school buildings would be modified and strengthened in a $950,000 upgrade as soon as resource consent was signed off.

"We're hoping the work will be completed by the beginning of the school term next year, but the majority of the work will be completed by February next year," Mr Hunter said.

The modernisation and structural strengthening will focus on the hall and administration areas. Builders will also strengthen the school's major two-storey block.

"The main thing is that it's modernising the main area. The hall will be a modern learning environment.

"The hall is the heart of the school, every class has sport and physical education there. It's well due for refurbishment," Mr Hunter said.

Most of the funding will come from the Ministry of Education, with the school board of trustees also contributing.

"With the completion of this project, the school will be looking great," Mr Hunter said.

The improvements would produce a good teaching and learning environment for pupils and staff, he said.
