At least 2000 people are expected to attend the Chinese New Year celebrations in Dunedin tonight.

Lan Yuan-Dunedin Chinese Garden is set to bring in the Year of the Snake, with celebrations starting at 7pm.

Lan Yuan visitor programme co-ordinator Chris Watts said people should be prepared to wait in line as the garden will be packed.

Entry fees for the garden will be reduced to a gold coin for the event.

People waiting to enter would be entertained with activities including calligraphy, performances showcasing traditional dance and music, as well many food trucks, Mr Watts said.

He asked those waiting to be patient and respectful of each other.

The celebrations include a dragon parade from Princes St to the garden at 7pm, a dragon dance at 7.15pm and a lion dance, among other cultural performances, from 7.30pm.

The evening will be capped off at 10pm with a fireworks display.
