Two strangers who unknowingly shared one great idea have teamed up to create an event showcasing the South’s finest motorcycles.

About 200 motorcycles will be on display this weekend at the Star Insure Southern Motorcycle Show at the Edgar Centre.

Organised by the Otago Motorcycle Club and Rotary Club of Dunedin South, the event came about due to two great ideas from two great minds.

Rotary Club of Dunedin South president Neville Auton, who comes from a motorbike family, thought holding the event before next weekend’s Burt Munro Challenge in Invercargill would catch a few bikers on their way down.

He called the Edgar Centre and booked in the event.

Then, a week later, Otago Motorcycle Club member Mark Burrows went to book in the exact same event on the same weekend.

"He was told there was already one booked — two heads are better than one so we combined efforts.

"We got together and we’ve been working probably for a good nine months or more sorting out bits and pieces just to make it all happen," Mr Auton said.

He said there would be many highlights, including the

Britten V1000, a handbuilt racing motorcycle designed and built in Christchurch by New Zealander John Britten and a group of friends in 1994.

"This [motorcycle] just blew everybody’s minds with its design," Mr Auton said.

"Nobody had seen anything like it.

"It's all carbon fibre and it’s all very intricate ... it’s very, very cool, and just one of the things we have going on here."

Motorbikes entered in the event were judged over seven categories, with the winners decided last night.

The show takes place today and tomorrow, starting at 9.30am and running throughout the day.

Tickets will be sold at the door and proceeds will go to various charities.
