Two candidates, Harriet Geoghegan and Nicholas Graves, will contest the Otago University Students Association presidential election this month.
Miss Geoghegan is a sitting association executive member, having been elected as commerce representative at a by-election in March.
Last year's association presidential election ended controversially, when president-elect Jo Moore was disqualified.
The association's independent election arbitrator, Prof Paul Roth, found she had breached several election rules, including exceeding the then campaign spending limit of $1000, as well as a requirement for candidates and their campaign materials not to be within 20 metres of any polling booth, during the voting period.
Nominations for posts on next year's executive closed at 4pm on Thursday.
Association returning officer Simon Wilson briefed the 2010 candidates on the election rules at two meetings on campus yesterday.
He hoped that last year's events would make candidates "more aware of the importance of following the rules."
"If candidates don't follow the rules, then there will be consequences," he added.
Some rules have been changed since last year and presidential campaign spending has been cut to a maximum of $500, with $300 for non-presidential candidates.
Voting runs from August 24 until August 27.
Successful candidates will take up their positions at the start of next year.
