A 7-year-old boy was taken to hospital and two other children were injured when a children's motorised train overturned at an event intended to be a positive alternative to Halloween.
An ambulance was called to the Light Party at Forsyth Barr Stadium about 6.40pm yesterday after the Noddy Train tipped over, throwing children from it.
St John South Island communications adviser Ian Henderson said a 7-year-old boy was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate head injuries and two others were treated at the scene.
It is understood the boy was crushed by the train when it rolled.
Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said police attended the incident and had referred the matter to WorkSafe New Zealand.
''It sounds like they were thrown [from the motorised train] and there was some talk of a crush injury,'' he said.
How the train overturned was unknown and details were scant.
Light Party organiser Grant Hardy said he did not witness the incident and was unwilling to comment.
A Dunedin Hospital spokesman said late last night the boy was being assessed in the emergency department.
