Children view the world differently to adults - a point which was made clear at Port Chalmers School yesterday.

As part of the school's annual artist-in-residence programme Seacliff visual artist Juliet Novena Sorrel will spend the week with pupils, helping them create a map of their community and masks of animals which live there.

The project, called We are Here, started yesterday with children working in groups to map the main street of Port Chalmers with some "differing perspectives".

"They see where they live quite differently to adults," she said.

Ms Novena Sorrel believed creating maps allowed children to identify with their communities in a stronger way.

"It makes them really feel like they belong somewhere."

Their map will come to life on Sunday when the children parade down George St, Port Chalmers, at noon on the way to Watson Park, where it will be laid out.
