Easter holidaymakers faced a relatively free-flowing trip back to Dunedin yesterday.
Police said traffic in Dunedin was moderate and most drivers returning from the break drove to the conditions and within the speed limits.
There were only a few minor crashes in the city during the day yesterday, but they were not believed to be related to returning holiday traffic.
Overall driver behaviour in the area was good during the weekend, although two people remain in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit after a serious crash on the Southern Motorway about 9pm Saturday.
The men, aged 23 and 24, survived despite the car they were in crumpling on impact with a power pole near the Green Island off-ramp.
Both men were in stable condition in intensive care last night.
They were two of three Otago people who were admitted to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries during the weekend after car crashes.
The third was in a vehicle that left State Highway 83 at Otekaieke, 54km northwest of Oamaru, early on Sunday. Duntroon dairy worker Mitchell Thomas Clarke (19) was killed in the crash.
The injured man was flown to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition, but was last night in a stable condition in a general ward, a hospital spokesman said.
Speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
