The Epiphany Summer Theatre School was to rehearse for three weeks in January and perform Stage Spectacular!, a show featuring music in the style of Glee.
In 2009, the theatre school produced High School Musical at Dunedin's Mayfair Theatre. Thirty-two young performers had the opportunity to rehearse full time for 16 days and then gave five performances to rave reviews.
However, producer and theatre star Chris Fennessy said he had to cancel the 2012 summer school for 18-25-year-olds because not enough people showed up to the auditions in November.
"We had about 30 kids interested, but unfortunately we needed around 40 to at least break even and go for it.
"I'm really disappointed, as are the kids who would have been involved in January."
A proud King's High School old boy, Mr Fennessy grew up in Dunedin and had many fond memories of his previous sporting and cultural activities.
He said they had continued to shape his desire to succeed in the various facets of his life, and he was determined to share that with young performing talent in Dunedin by offering them as many opportunities as possible.
His summer schools aimed to foster and create performance opportunities for musical theatre performers.
For that reason, he hoped to revive the school later next year.
"I'm not giving up ... I know it'll be a brilliant opportunity for all involved. So, I'm looking at it again in September 2012 or January 2013."
