Dunedin police are appealing for information about a ''random, senseless act of violence'' in which a 22-year-old man was bottled in the face.
Acting Senior Sergeant Ed Baker said the victim was ''minding his own business'' when another man hit him in the face with a bottle and ran away.
The incident occurred about 3.30am on Sunday at the steps connecting Dowling and Tennyson Sts. The victim, whose front teeth were smashed, was taken to Dunedin Hospital, Acting Snr Sgt Baker said .
''It was a random, senseless act of violence. The offender was last seen sprinting down Dowling St; that's how brave he is.''
The offender appeared to be alone, as was the victim.
There did not appear to be any motivation behind the attack, and police said they would welcome any information about the incident.
