Teen drove on motorway at 175kmh: police

A teenager clocked driving at 175kmh on Dunedin's Northern Motorway had his car impounded, while a woman was caught driving 40kmh over the limit.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police attended the Dunedin-Waitati Highway (State Highway 1) incident at 12.05am on Sunday.

A 19-year-old male behind the wheel was initially seen driving at 118kmh, but then "accelerated heavy" to 175kmh, Snr Sgt Bond alleged.

Two passengers were in the car and the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

Officers attempted to stop the car but it accelerated away. Police caught up to it further down the road as it headed for Dunedin.

The teen had his licence suspended for 28 days, his car impounded and was summonsed to appear in court on charges of aggravated failure to stop and travelling at a dangerous speed.

Later in the day, police were called to the Manuka Gorge Highway (SH8) in South Otago.

A 46-year-old woman was stopped doing 144kmh in a 100kmh zone in a Suzuki Swift.

"Her explanation for exceeding the speed limit was because she’s an irresponsible driver," Snr Sgt Bond said.

The woman’s licence was suspended for 28 days and she was issued an infringement notice.

Police also stopped a vehicle travelling at 106kmh in a 50kmh zone in Crawford St at 8.25pm on Saturday.

Three male passengers were in the vehicle and alcohol was not involved, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The licence of the 20-year-old female driver was suspended for 28 days. Her car was impounded and she was summonsed to appear in court on a dangerous speed charge.
