Forget taking your mobility scooter around the corner to the local shop - Dunedin man Ted Humphries took his for a spin across town.
Mr Humphries (75) was seen driving his mobility scooter on State Highway 1 this week and said he started his journey in South Dunedin and was on his way to Northeast Valley.
He had fitted his scooter out with a weatherproof shield on a $1700 stainless steel frame and driving and hazard lights.
The sometimes indifferent Dunedin weather did not deter Mr Humphries, who took his scooter out every day.
‘‘I can go out in all weathers - it doesn't worry me at all.''
Mr Humphries applied for a mobility scooter from the New Zealand Lotteries Grants Board in 2007 because he was paralysed on his left side and unable to walk freely.
He had since ‘‘worn out'' that scooter as well as its replacement, and was now riding his third scooter in nine years.
Mr Humphries took the scooter into Dunedin's Golden Centre Mall on the eve of last year's Super 15 final between the Highlanders and the Hurricanes to ask if people wanted to write messages of support for the local side.
He ended up with more than 800 messages scrawled across his vehicle.
‘‘I'm going to get signatures of some of the players when they come back [for the 2016 season] in February.''
