The case of Chewie, the lovable border terrier cross apparently abandoned at a motorway rest area near Dunedin, has the SPCA puzzled and concerned.

The organisation is appealing for information after the dog was found abandoned, tied to a rubbish bin with a long red cable, on August 27.

The young adult female was found at a rest area on the Waitati-Waikouaiti Rd near Merton, which SPCA animal welfare inspector Sophia Tinirau described as "quite remote".

The dog had no food, water, or shelter.

She was found by a member of the public and brought to the SPCA.

She had no microchip and was not desexed.

Chewie showed no shortage of personable behaviour yesterday when visited by the Otago Daily Times.

Ms Tinirau said the case was unusual, as normally it was more obvious why animals were abandoned, for instance when there was a litter of unwanted puppies, or animals with behavioural issues.

"With her, it's a puzzle why such a sweet dog would be abandoned."

The SPCA was keen for any information from the public about the incident.

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

 - The SPCA said last night there had been a lot of interest in adopting Chewie.
