Emergency services were called to Maori Rd following reports a car had rolled down a 10m embankment at 8.30am.
Acting Senior Sergeant Tania Baron said the student was driving north in Maori Rd, when he came out of the shade and "was blinded by the sunlight".
The man then drove his car where he believed there was a road, and it rolled over the embankment. He was unhurt.
Inquiries into the crash were continuing, she said.
