A 16-year-old suffered chest injuries when the stolen car he was driving hit a tree near the Oval in Dunedin yesterday morning, Senior Sergeant Tania Baron said.
The car was carrying two male passengers, aged 15 and 16, when it hit the traffic island at the intersection of Princes St and South Rd, then hit a tree, about 2.30am, Snr Sgt Baron said.
The driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening. The 16-year-old passenger suffered minor arm injuries.
The three fled but were caught by police on King Edward St, Snr Sgt Baron said.
Police had received calls shortly before the crash, about the silver Mitsubishi speeding on George St and running a red light, she said.
The car was believed to have been taken from an Abbotsford address.
The trio would appear in the Youth Court.
