The project team — combining Dunedin City Council and Salmond Reed Architects — was named one of the heritage category winners at the New Zealand Architecture National Awards last night.
It had been on the shortlist after winning the same category for the southern region alongside Ayrburn, Arrowtown, which involved the transformation of derelict farm buildings into a hospitality venue.
Intricate and complex work at the Dunedin Railway Station included extensive repairs to the roof, new copper tiles being created for the central dome and the Marseille tiles of the main roofs being cleaned.
Dunedin deputy mayor Cherry Lucas said the work was an example of the value the city placed in its heritage, and in partnerships with contractors and artisans.
The project team was also a winner at the South Island Property Awards this month, receiving a judges’ choice award alongside the team behind the University of Otago’s Te Rangihīroa College development.
A Wānaka project led by Roberts Gray Architects was one of the winners in the housing category.
Wānaka S.K.I. House was described in its citation as being meticulously detailed and experientially beautiful.
