Introducing Dunedin locals to the pageantry and rich traditions of Pakistani weddings was the goal for one woman at the weekend.

Multicultural Wedding Festival organiser Humara Fiaz said she had been preparing to host the event since October last year, and the goal was not only to share Pakistani wedding traditions, but also to showcase many other cultures’ traditions.

The free event at the Fairfield Community Hall showcased the glamour and deep traditions of Pakistani weddings.

‘‘Our weddings can be held over at least five days. It’s a beautiful — but foreign — concept to many people ... We are showing what some of the things we do for Pakistani weddings are.’’

Attendees were able to get henna body art done, their face painted and enjoy food from food trucks.

Mrs Fiaz said one of the many Pakistani wedding traditions they were re-enacting was a nikah, which was the official joining of the couple.

Dunedin couple Shayne and Michael Milne re-enacted their wedding from 12 years ago.

They both wore their traditional dress and relived their special celebration.

The day also included cultural performances including Chinese, African and Japanese dances and music acts.

Mrs Fiaz said she had received great feedback from the attendees.
