Dunedin 2-year-old Jessie Keen enjoyed a swim at the St Clair Salt Water Pool yesterday, before its closure for the season.

The toddler, who has been to the pool more than 50 times this season, swam with grandparents Peter and Marilyn Haslemore, who live at St Clair.

Mr Haslemore said she loved jumping into the pool, using flutter boards and playing with other children.

"It's really good for co-ordination, learning and interaction," he said.

The beachside salt water pool is heated to 28degC and open seven days a week for six months each year.

The current season finishes tonight at 7pm.

Since opening for the summer on October 1 last year, the pool had only been closed for one day, when rough seas flooded it.

This season staff had noticed more toddlers being brought into play and swim.

Lifeguard Robyn Urquhart said parents and caregivers were recognising the pool as a great option for their children's recreation and skill development.

"It's been a great season ...""All our regulars were swimming even through February when it was a bit colder, and we've noticed more toddlers and families in our numbers this year," she said.

The pool will open again in October.

Ms Urquhart said the pool would be plugged and kept full of water over winter, but it would be gated for security.

Average daily figures for the season were on par with those from the 2010-11 summer, although weather changes dictated slight variances.
