Illegally dumped rubbish on a roadside was cleaned up after a Dunedin tenant left his contact details inside a rubbish bag.

Terry Hickling said a ''small truckload'' of household rubbish was dumped outside his property on Mt Cargill Rd, in Dunedin, on Thursday night.

''The odd bag of rubbish gets dumped but never to this extent. This is way over the top.''

The rubbish included several full council refuse bags, empty bottles and an old television, he said.

He went through some of the rubbish and found a speeding ticket and some student loan balance sheets with the same name on them.

He contacted police yesterday and was told legally they could only send the address a warning letter, he said.

A Dunedin City Council spokeswoman said residents should leave dumped rubbish and refrain from looking for letters with names and addresses because it could hamper the council investigation.

If illegally dumped rubbish was found, then the council should be contacted so a contractor could collect it.

However, the Otago Daily Times located a George St landlord who confirmed his tenants had dumped the rubbish. The transfer centre was closed so the tenants decided to dump the rubbish on the roadside, he said.

He contacted the tenants and had them collect the rubbish on Friday afternoon.
