A report showing Dunedin City Council emissions have increased has prompted concern.
The report, tabled at yesterday's council meeting, showed total greenhouse gas emissions from council activities in the 2014-15 financial year were 29,446 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).
This was 2.8% higher than the previous year and equated to 240kg CO2e per resident and 530kg CO2e per rateable property.
Much of the increase was probably due to an improvement in data quality relating to air travel.
Cr Jinty MacTavish acknowledged the increases could be due to better reporting, but was nevertheless concerned about the trend.
She believed the increase should prompt staff to take a look at the aims in its emissions reduction plan earlier than the 2017-18 financial year as originally planned.
"I think there are a range of areas in which we need to have enhanced focus in relation to emissions reduction,'' Cr MacTavish said.
