There is something about Irish Celtic music and the way it creates such an emotive atmosphere where anything is possible ... even magic. Celtic Illusion is the brainchild of Anthony Street and is a blend of the traditional, the contemporary and the spellbinding. He has taken his two passions, ‘‘electrifying contemporary Irish dance and awe-inspiring grand illusions’’ to produce a night of high-intensity dance with impressive disappearing (and appearing) acts and levitation.
The night was made even more wonderful with the addition of live musicians; flautist and bodhran player Rennie Pearson, fiddle player Shimna Higgins and vocalist Catherine Hay. Pearson was a delight and transported us to the Emerald Isle while Higgins was exceptional and Hay shone with her beautiful voice. The entire soundtrack for the evening was haunting, evocative and definitely warmed the cockles. The intricate lighting design and gloriously sequinned costumes made for a colourful and striking production.
Our lead dancers, Georgia May and Cathal Keaney, were outstanding and stunned the audience with their precision, timing and frenetic footwork. Keaney had a commanding air about his performance that made for a charismatic leading man and May was simply sublime. She captivated us with her strength, grace and delicate fluidity. The entire cast impressed throughout the performance for their immaculate footwork and impeccable timing — the way they travelled across the stage was phenomenal. I have a ballet background and it astounds me how Irish dancers are able to do what they do all the while making it look completely easy and not at all exhausting!
This is a thoroughly entertaining production that will leave you happy — exhausted for them, but happy.
