Richard Li (8) tries a new helmet on for size with the help of Constable Emily Plew, while River Enright (3) takes her wheels for a spin during yesterday’s Family Bike Day in Dunedin’s Marlow Park.

Road safety education co-ordinator Aukje van Aalst said the event, run by Connecting Dunedin and Plunket, was all about encouraging children to be safe on their bikes.

Among the free events on offer were bike tune-ups, helmet safety checks, bike decorating and face painting, and a sausage sizzle.

Hi-vis gear and bike bells were also being given away, and children could ride the park’s skills track and pump tracks.

"It’s been really good," Ms van Aalst said.

"There’s been lots of positive feedback, lots of happy people."
