CanTeen provides information and support for cancer patients aged 13 to 24, as well as their siblings and friends.
The organisation's work was significant because one in four young people with cancer died, she said.
Dunedin treasurer Andrew Crocker said CanTeen had a member-driven focus and supported about 80 members in Otago.
Support for patients both in and out of hospital and regular catch-ups and activities were the group's main focus.
After a member of the group died this month, CanTeen members had relied on one another to endure the experience and had realised the value of the comfort it had provided.
As the group received no Government funding or financial support from other cancer-related charities, members had to organise fundraising events so activities and support could continue.
The next event will be a luxury evening cruise aboard Tiakina, sponsored by the boat, liquor company Lion Nathan and St Clair restaurant Salt, on September 25.
Guests will experience a three-hour Otago Harbour cruise, with drinks and a continuous supper provided.
Mr Crocker said the money raised would go towards an end-of-year South Island camp in Nelson.
"It's a big expense for us, but it's going to be an awesome camp," he said.
As the national organisation had to cancel a nationwide camp because of a lack of funding, it was even more important for members to be able to attend the South Island version.
